The formula of Formula 1 changes over time, and in 2026 a new rule set for the cars kicks into effect, but F1 isn't the only series looking to a new car. IndyCar has recently released information about their upcoming car, due in 2028. IndyCar has been collaborating with Dallara to produce a new car with a new aesthetic intended to appeal to new fans while retaining styling elements to keep that IndyCar look. Dallara has produced chassis for IndyCar since 1997 and has been their exclusive chassis supplier since 2008.

Absolute Zero Motorsport has not yet seen a mockup of the car, but IndyCar says the new car should be about 85 to 100 pounds lighter. This may sound insignificant to folks not intimately familiar with motorsport, but if you are passionate about racing you understand that a hundred pounds is a big deal. Every ounce of weight reduction is increased track performance. The 2028 car is expected to switch to a 2.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, and while there are no specific performance figures yet listed, they say they anticipate an increase in both power and torque over the outgoing 2.2-liter engine, also a twin-turbo V6 typically producing 650 to 750 horsepower.

IndyCar says that the new car design revolves around three core principles: competition, power, and safety. They expect the new design to work well and offer competitive racing on all four types of tracks raced on by IndyCar: short ovals, superspeedways, street circuits, and permanent road courses. Safety improvements include a more ergonomic cockpit for drivers, a new roll hoop, and integrated windscreen.
